Date: Saturday 7th June 2025
Time: 10:30am - 3:30pm
Cost: £40
In this fun introductory workshop we will learn how to use gouache by using aerial references of allotments to identify shapes and patterns to paint. Each stage will be broken down simply and easily, so you can discover your flow with this versatile and wonderful paint. Please bring any photos you have of your allotment, if you like to use them. By the end of the day you will have produced a beautiful and decorative illustration. Materials are provided.
The workshop is taking place at the lovely Making Mill right in the centre of Hebden Bridge, on Valley Road, HX7 7BZ, where you are surrounded by artists studios, delicious cafés and restaurants and superb countryside.
After a brief introduction we shall be discussing the properties of gouache, who uses it and why. We shall then have a group demonstration, playing with different thicknesses, learning to control the paintbrush and setting up a colour pallette.
When we are ready to start the painting, using plenty of references and examples, Harriet will go by each step of the painting with you. Starting with the background, you will map out the patch and start to build up the rows of patterns. You will build the patterns up using different techniques until the patterns of vegetables pop on the page! It is up to you to make this as simple or as challenging as you need! Sometimes the most beautiful work can be the simplest!
Afterwards, if there is time, you may want to add some gardening tools or maybe add a gardener or two lying on the ground looking up at you!
We will finish the day with a show and tell and share our feedback and responses working with the paint (optional).
Cost: £40 per persons, includes materials
Hot beverages and biscuits are available but bring your own packed lunch
Please note the photo of the students are from a previous workshop I ran based at Northlight Studio, based next door to Making Mill. Photos of the Making Mill are curtesy of Jinny Riley.
